Abstract

The conquest of Sindh by Muhammad bin Qasim in 712 may rightly be termed as the year of interaction between Arabic and Urdu. Arabic being the official language of Islam attracted the attention of the indigenous converts and hence influenced all the local languages including Urdu. This impact can be perceived through the rituals' offering, nomenclature, terminology, vocabulary and the like. Writers of verse and prose have been freely employing Arabic terms, words, phrases and proverbs to convey their message more promptly and vividly. This article is an interactive study of Arabic and Urdu with a special focus on Arabic's influence on Urdu.
