The concept of jihad in Islamic jurisprudence and political thought extends far beyond the narrow notion of armed conflict, encompassing spiritual, intellectual, social, and defensive dimensions. In modern times, reformist interpretations have sought to redefine jihad within contemporary moral, legal, and political frameworks, often emphasizing its role in establishing justice, resisting oppression, and fostering ethical and intellectual struggle. This article critically examines these modern perspectives, highlighting how they diverge from classical understandings and shift the discourse from traditional jurisprudential boundaries to new contextual readings. While such reinterpretations underscore the adaptability of Islamic thought, they also raise concerns among traditional scholars regarding the neglect of historical and scriptural foundations. The study concludes that a balanced approach is necessary—one that remains faithful to the original principles of jihad while addressing the ethical and political realities of the modern age.
