Abstract

A novel is at least a new world, or a new understanding of it. Is it possible to present the new world with old words? Or it requires new words. If the existing social structure (ethos) and concept of reality (world view) is to be changed, then mere wording does not work, one has to do experiments of form. Then, in a post-colonial society, it is difficult to bear the burden of history and to mark the form of error implicit in its construction, without a new understanding of history. In Mirza Athar Baig's novel, Ghulam Bagh, word-making and formal experiments come out as prominent features. This novel is a dilemma of the characters trying to understand the reality and determine their status in the post-colonial situation. This article using the tools of close reading, explores the formal innovations of Ghulam Bagh.
